THE OLD BAKERY COTTAGE, ODCOMBE
The
Old Bakery Cottage, dating from 1790, has a secluded location in the picturesque
Somerset village of Odcombe, handily located for a wide range of attractions.
The area boasts many lovely walks, and several National Trust houses and gardens
are within a 20-minute drive from the cottage. The varied landscape ranges from
the quiet charm of the Somerset Levels to the splendour of Dorset's World Heritage
Coastline. The majestic cathedrals of Wells and Salisbury are easily reached,
as are the beautiful gardens of Stourhead and Forde Abbey. Small, character-filled
seaside towns such as Sidmouth and Lyme Regis contrast with the bustling harbour
at Weymouth. Literature lovers can explore Jane Austen's Bath and Thomas Hardy's
Wessex, while steam fans can enjoy the 16 miles of the West Somerset line.
The cottage, built from local hamstone, has a comfortable oak-beamed lounge, attractively decorated and furnished with a sofa, chair-bed, pine dresser, coffee table and TV unit. It is well stocked with books, games, jigsaws and videos - for adults and children. The spacious kitchen still has the brickwork from the original bakery oven, and is provided with a cooker, microwave, fridge, washing machine, fitted cupboards and breakfast bar. The conservatory has a table and chairs for dining, or for simply enjoying the tranquillity of the enclosed garden.
Upstairs,
the large bedroom has a double bed and single futon. The en-suite bathroom has
a bath and shower.
The garden is partly gravelled and has
raised decking. There is a stone seat in the shade of an evergreen, and garden
furniture is provided.
There is pedestrian access to the cottage through the
grounds of the adjoining Old Bakery, and street parking.
All guests will be given a warm, West Country welcome, with either a cream tea or a jug of cider and apples, according to preference.
